Veterans Community Project

our PLAN

On average only 15-20% of Veterans entering a housing services program achieve a permanent housing solution.

Therefore, many Veterans prefer to remain homeless rather than accept temporary shelter and inadequate supportive services or shared living options due to concerns about privacy, safety, and security. Moreover, the lack of ability to accommodate Veterans preferences for pets, people, and property is the single largest barrier to helping Veterans achieve long term housing stability. The heroes who once stood tall in uniform when not crawling through foxholes and trenches are now battling the invisible wounds of war, compounded by the harsh realities of life on the streets.

Veteran homelessness is a heartbreaking reality.

The Need for Veterans Community Project (VCP).

Founded by a group of combat Veterans from Kansas City in 2016, Veterans Community Project is a pioneering, unique, and highly effective transitional housing model which delivers safety, dignity, and a chance to rebuild Veteran lives.

Unlike flawed models, VCP delivers a stable housing platform via communities of tiny houses with onsite supportive services.

These homes, often complemented by a Resource Center and Community Center, offer Veterans a sense of privacy, security, and the opportunity to reintegrate into society at a comfortable pace. Each tiny home is thoughtfully designed to meet the unique needs of Veterans; they are pet friendly and are fully furnished with the necessities to help Veterans stabilize their lives, enjoy a healthy and hygienic environment and regain independence.

VCP's commitment to Veterans goes beyond providing stable transitional housing. By offering comprehensive supportive services, fostering community collaboration, and prioritizing individualized care, VCP empowers Veterans and their families, guiding them towards sustainable housing, self-sufficiency, and improved overall well-being.

Trained case managers work at each VCP campus to achieve incremental, lasting results in the areas of health and wellness, education, employment, financial literacy, and the development of a personal support network. When the Veteran is ready, VCP assists him or her in securing a permanent housing solution. Not only does the Veteran take the entire contents of the tiny house with them, but they also take the ongoing support of the Village as well.

As you might expect, VCP’s outcomes are transformative and impressive.

In 2022, there were 33,129 homeless Veterans in the United States. Unfortunately, we know tens of thousands more are living in secluded camps, dwelling underneath bridges, couch surfing, sleeping in cars, or hidden in plain sight.

In one recent nationally representative survey, 10% of Veterans reported that they had experienced homelessness at some point in their adult lives, and Veterans are two times more likely to experience homelessness than non-Veterans.

The root causes of Veteran homelessness are varied and complex to include exposure to traumatic events, lack of access to healthcare and supportive services. However, the single greatest impediment to ending Veteran homelessness is not the root causes but the inability of Veterans to access stable housing and supportive services. For example, only half of all Veterans are eligible for, or receive care, from the Veterans Affairs Healthcare system.

Your Invitation to get INVOLVED

Partner with Us

Veterans Community Project is the community’s project.

What began as a grassroots effort in Kansas City, Missouri, has become a national movement recognized by business leaders, military leaders, political voices, philanthropists, family foundations and thousands of volunteers.

In fact, it is often the motivated volunteers who are most actively helping connect VCP to key relationships within a city while also building and maintaining the Villages, organizing donation drives, hosting fundraisers, providing hospitality, packing hygiene bags and ‘snack packs’ and/or finding other meaningful ways to serve those who served their country.

We invite all patriots, independent of age, race, political affiliation, size of wallet or sphere of influence, to join the mission of Veterans Community Project, make a contribution, volunteer helping to end veteran homelessness and serve those who have served us.
